FutureOn, a dynamic software company based in Oslo, Norway, has been making waves in the oil and gas industry with their innovative approach to subsea operations design. Born from a multimedia company specializing in animations and motion graphics, FutureOn has evolved into a global player, operating virtually across the world. Their client base primarily consists of oil and gas service companies and major corporations seeking to enhance existing operations or build new subsurface facilities.
At the heart of FutureOn’s offering is FieldTwin, a cloud-based platform that revolutionizes the way engineers collaborate on subsea projects. This 3D environment provides a realistic representation of the sea floor, allowing teams to design and test underwater operations from anywhere in the world. With its open API and geospatially accurate data, FieldTwin integrates information from various sources, including national oil companies, governments, and weather bureaus, to create a comprehensive design tool that significantly speeds up the process of building operations on the sea floor.
As a small software company with big aspirations, FutureOn found itself at a critical juncture. With FieldTwin ready to launch, the company needed to quickly establish a strong presence in the market. Their goal was to position themselves as the preferred choice for digital twin developments in complex projects for national oil companies and major corporations, all while maintaining their independence.
The urgency was driven by two key factors. First, a full slate of upcoming tradeshows presented an opportunity to showcase FieldTwin to potential clients. Second, the company was facing financial pressures, having invested heavily in the development of their world-class software. FutureOn needed to attract not only engineers but also potential investors. With time of the essence, they turned to us at Ratcliff Creative to develop a visual identity and tactical messaging that would position them as the future of subsea design and development.

Our journey with FutureOn began with a referral to their Creative Innovation Officer, who was overseeing the company’s branding and marketing efforts. Despite the lack of a comprehensive plan, we embraced the challenge of working in a fast-paced, “fire-fighting” mode to meet their immediate needs.
Our first task was to design a logo for FieldTwin, building upon the existing FutureOn brand guidelines. Despite the geographical distance between our team and the client’s offices in Oslo, Edinburgh, and London, we established a smooth virtual collaboration process. To gain a deeper understanding of the product, we connected with the Vice President of Technology in Oslo for a comprehensive demo of FieldTwin.
In our design process, we developed numerous logo concepts but, as is our practice, presented only three to the client. The chosen design featured two stylized arrows forming an abstract eye, symbolizing the flow of information between designers and the digital twin on the sea floor. This concept perfectly captured the essence of FieldTwin’s ability to visualize designs quickly.
Following the success of the FieldTwin logo, we expanded our work to create a comprehensive suite of brand expressions. This included brochures, tradeshow booth designs, standalone graphics, print and digital advertisements, a new website design, and sales presentations.
The visual identity we crafted was characterized by a restrained color palette of muted blue and green, evoking the deep-sea environment. We incorporated vignettes and organic shapes as background elements, suggesting both the ocean and the flow of data. This approach, combined with clean white surfaces, resulted in crisp and modern layouts that perfectly represented FutureOn’s innovative spirit.
Typography played a crucial role in our design strategy. We used Akagi, a sans-serif typeface with a rich character set, which further enhanced the modern aesthetic of the brand. We kept the use of typography minimal across all materials, allowing the visuals to speak for themselves. In an unusual but beneficial arrangement, our team also took on the responsibility of copywriting, ensuring that the content was tailored specifically to the design layouts and told a compelling story about FutureOn’s technology.
Our collaboration with FutureOn provided them with a robust visual language and messaging framework that has served them well in a challenging market environment. Despite ongoing market fluctuations and leadership changes, the branding and marketing tools we developed have effectively positioned FutureOn in front of engineers and decision-makers.
The visual identity we created not only enhanced FutureOn’s presence at tradeshows but also solidified their reputation as a forward-thinking company in the subsea design sector. This has been crucial for their ongoing efforts to attract new clients and investors, helping them maintain their independence while pursuing strategic partnerships. Our work has empowered FutureOn to communicate the advantages of their FieldTwin platform more clearly, illustrating how it simplifies and accelerates the design process for subsea operations. The cohesive brand messaging has resonated with their target audience, enabling them to better articulate their value proposition in a crowded market.
While FutureOn continues to navigate the challenges of growth and market positioning, the foundation we laid has provided them with a strong platform for future success. The visual language and messaging we developed continue to serve as valuable assets in their ongoing journey to revolutionize subsea design and development.
